Shetland Marine Energy Development

Description: To maximise the opportunities of the newly emerging marine renewable energy sector for the Shetland community.

Start Date and Duration: The project started in August 2009 and will run for one year

Deliverables/Outputs: The main objectives of the project are:

  • Identify potential sites for the development of marine renewable projects around Shetland and integrate them into the Shetland Marine Spatial Plan
  • Produce site profiles to assist developers with their initial site selection.  Information such as renewable energy resource, biodiversity, other marine users and environmental designations, potential cable landing points, suitable areas for developing shore based support and local electrical infrastructure capabilities.  This shall relate to the Marine Spatial Plan and be available in a marine GIS format.
  • Produce a document giving guidelines on work licensing and permissions required along with a list of stakeholders and their contacts aimed at assisting marine renewable energy developers
  • Promote the work being undertaken by the project and encourage potential developers and inward investors to use facilities in Shetland
